Has your podiatrist suggested shock wave therapy to assist with pain management, preventative treatment or a sporting injury? Here’s everything you need to know about this innovative therapy.

Invented in the late 90's, shock wave therapy uses single acoustic pressure waves to treat musculoskeletal and dermatological pathologies. It delivers a mechanical stress to injured tissues and provides immediate pain relief and a healing reaction within the body.

At Cutting Edge Podiatry, we utilise the EMS Swiss Dolorclast Smart20 to treat plantar fasciopathy, achilles tendinopathy as well as a range of other lower limb conditions. We apply either radial or focused shockwaves to the area and you’ll find it to be a fast and effective treatment, without the need for medication.

Whether you play soccer, rugby, AFL or NRL you’ll also find great benefit in utilising shock wave therapy for injury prevention, muscle recovery and muscle improvement during the season. After all, some of the world’s best athletes can’t be wrong! Some players are even treated with shock wave therapy during a match, at half time or immediately after.

How does Shock Wave Therapy Work?

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is the application of Shock Waves in medicine. When pressure waves are applied to injured tissues, they stimulate a range of metabolic reactions including:

  • A reduction in pain felt by nerve fibres

  • An increase in blood circulation in the surrounding soft tissues

  • The beginning of healing processes, which is triggered by stem cell activation

For most injuries, you’ll require 3 to 5 treatments, with a week between each one. However, if we’re treating you for injury prevention or muscle recovery, your podiatrist will create a personalised approach to suit your situation.

Whether you’re a professional athlete or just take your sport seriously, arrange an appointment with one of our podiatrists to discuss the use of shock wave therapy in your training or injury management plan. Make an online booking or call 02 9875 3065.
